Mathinna Falls
My adventure today took me to the mystical Mathinna Falls. Mathinna is a place I have never ventured to before. What a tiny little township tucked away on the North East of Tasmania nestled inland not far from Launceston. The trip to this location involved a bit of rough driving on forestry road. 6kms to the right of Mathinna we found the car park which was our starting point to Mathinna Falls.
This 15 minute walk was a very easy walk winding our way through the lush green surroundings. There were plentitude of native ferns framing the walkway. The creek bed was extremely clear being able to see the rock bed that lays beneath. A few trees have fallen at some stage, creating a natural bridge to further explore the water. Winding our way up the rocky path we find our destination, Mathinna Falls.
Keen to get the perfect picture, I decide we should cross the creek to get to the other side for a better vantage point. I can say that the rocks chosen to cross were extremely slippery like ice. Carefully placing each foot on a rock we managed to cross over the clear creek bed. I then am able to start snapping away at the gorgeous picture perfect falls captured so nicely with the green ferns and brown striking log.
After exploring, we carefully make our way back across the creek without falling in and venture our way back through the lush forest back to the car. Upon reading up on this waterfall on Waterfalls of Tasmania I was surprised to find there are another three falls situated above these falls and with all falls combined the height of Mathinna Falls is over 80m.
After leaving Mathinna Falls and following the advice of Google Maps we tried to find our way back to Launceston, by going the long way around. However, the country side around this part of the state was simply idealistic, with Ben Lomond captivating the landscape.
