Magnificent Mount Duncan

Magnificent Mount Duncan is situated in the Dial Range on the North West Coast of Tasmania. On the AllTrails app the
Mount Duncan Circuit suggested that the walk would cover 7.2kms. My friend and I decided we would take on the challenge and climb to the peak of Mount Duncan.

We parked at Mount Gnomon carpark which is the start of this walk. We walked along the 4WD track that was pretty churned up and muddy. We approached a sign that said Tall Trees Walk and so we continued down our 4WD track. Luckily I had started the AllTrails App navigation tracker and after about 400m down the road past the sign, I looked at my phone to find we had gone off the trail. We were meant to turn onto the Tall Trees Walk. So turning on our heels we backtracked our path back to the turn off sign.

Now that we were back on track we continued onward and upward, literally. But first we headed down toward the river bed tracking alongside it for a bit. One thing we noticed were the amount of uprooted trees laying across the path blocking the way. We had to bush bash our way through the scrub.

We crossed the river a couple of places and then headed upwards coming to the base of Mount Duncan. This is where our mission began.

Step by step we slowly made our way to the summit. On numerous occasions we both felt like giving up but determination was paramount in accomplishing our goals. When we finally reached the summit we were rewarded with an amazing 360 degree view ranging from the Three Sisters through to Mount Roland and Don Heads.

After taking in the breath taking view we made the decent cautiously back down to the forest floor as it was quiet slippery in spots. As this was a circuit we didn’t have to back track. We did however come down to the base of the mountain and find a car park which would have cut a good 4kms off our walk. The road was muddy though and would only be accessible with a 4WD. The walk ended being a bit over 10kms and not the prescribed 7.2kms on the app.

A great day was had out in nature chatting to my friend and de-stressing from the work week. Can’t wait to get out and do it again.
