Mystery Creek Caves

Mystery Creek Caves is not far from Hastings Caves and was definitely a mystery to explore. The track brought about it’s own sort of mystery with a historical story to tell. The track is a bit over 4kms return and is an easy track to walk.

Along the journey, the history of this place came to life with remnant of old quarry tools, bricks and bottles still visible within the environment. You get a real feel for what this place was like a hundred years ago.

Along the way a big black tiger snake decided to show us the path to take as it slithered in front of us, leading the way.

We made our way past the old quarry site and started to descend down through the forest to find the entry to Mystery Creek Cave which was tucked away in the corner of the forest floor. As we were making our way down we came across two Lyre birds with much delight, as we had never seen Lyre birds in the Tasmanian wild before.

We made it to the caves and read all of the safety messages and warnings. We placed our head torches on and enter the cold, dark cave. It certainly is a mystery searching a cave, looking for the different twists and turns it will take. The cave was very large and it had a creek running through with some sort of cave fish that didn’t seem phased by the light shining in their water.

We spent a fair bit of time exploring and then we came out of the cave and had a snack to eat under the ferns. We then made our way back up along the same track to return to our car. We did pass a couple along the track and I simply warned them about the snake that we had seen and it was enough to obviously scare them as they made a 180 degree turn and headed straight back to their car.

Walking in the South of the state was great as it had different flora and fauna to view. This walk was an easy and relaxing walk that we both thoroughly enjoyed.
