South Cape Bay walk

South Cape Bay walk is 18kms long and starts at Cockle Creek and heads South. The walk takes you through a diversity of landscapes starting with lots of rocky ground, green reeds and ferns; then shifts to over hanging small trees making an arch to walk through; and then it changes completely to a flat plain with low shrubs, flowers and grass.

After walking through the diverse landscape, the sound of the waves start to call you closer, intriguing you to explore. After walking 8kms you come out to a cliff face that you walk around and get the first look at South Cape Bay. The ocean is so blue in contrast to the striking landscape. It seriously feels like you are standing on the edge of the world.

The view from the top is amazing. Looking left you can see South East Cape which is the southern most point in Australia. Looking right you can see the massive stretch of the ocean with waves rolling in constantly.

We reach the staircase that takes you quickly down to the beach reaching the soft sand. It is here we are greeted by the many March flies. We explore the base and then walk up to Lion Rock at the end of the beach. The March flies hitch a ride on my partner’s backpack.

At the end of South Cape Bay is Lion Rock, a massive vertical rock perched out of the ocean in all its strength and glory. We explored the rocks, looking in the crystal clear rock pools and my partner went for a quick, cold dip in the ocean to refresh.

Whilst sitting on a rock, with thirty March flies joining me, taking photographs of this beautiful place, I was able to capture a lone surfer catching waves. Upon leaving I briefly talked to the surfer’s partner who informed me that he walked 2 hours in with his surfboard. That is dedication! Fantastic spot to catch waves though.

After spending about an hour feeling absolute bliss from being in such a beautiful environment, we set back on the track to head back to Cockle Creek. I grabbed a photo with my partner up on top before heading back. South Cape Bay is crisp, clean and picturesque. I can tick this off my Tassie Wanderer list.
