Westmoreland Falls and Honeycomb Caves

‘It is in the still silence of nature where one will find true bliss!’ (j.j.c)

With the amount of rain fall in Tasmania of recent I was excited to get out into Tasmanian’s blissful natural surroundings. I was eager to take my partner to Honeycomb Caves and explore its depths a bit further. This was our first port of call and, once again, it didn’t disappoint.

The water was surging fiercely amongst the cold jagged rocks racing through the caves. With limited light from our phones we could see the stalactites clutching on to the cave ceiling showcasing geometric artwork that have lasted for hundreds of thousands of years.

We jumped in the car and only had to head a couple of kilometres up the road to begin our walk to Westmoreland Falls. The scenery along this track is picturesque with different shades of greenery bordering the extremely muddy track.

In one particular spot the musk of a deer was extremely apparent and some damage to a fallen branch showed evidence of recent deer behaviour. I have never seen deer in the Tasmanian wilderness so would have been great to spot one. Unfortunately even with an eager eye there were no sightings of deer.

After treading carefully through the muddy floor we followed the noise of running water and made it to the base of Westmoreland Falls. There were two falls falling close by joint together with the water raging down stream. Westmoreland was impressive with a good forty metre drop of white water wash falling over brown layered rock.

This waterfall and walk truly made me reset and appreciate the natural environment we have at our door step. This appreciation was topped off when we walked back to the car and came across an echidna doing his own thing exploring his habitat.

  1. Hi in recent posts on FB there have been photos of shell fossils at these falls. Did you spot any? I need to go back and look for them.

    1. I didn’t spot any but I wasn’t looking because I didn’t know. I will definitely have a look when we head back there one day. Thanks for letting me know.
